It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.\u00a0What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places\u2014and there are so many\u2014where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.\u00a0And if we do act, in however small a way, we don\u2019t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory. \u275e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/2229-to-be-hopeful-in-bad-times-is-not-just-foolishly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Kenn Orphan:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u275d Taking action is not\u00a0<i>\u201cfutile and fruitless\u201d<\/i>\u00a0as those unaffected directly by injustice or oppression would suggest. And although it will not end injustice, brutality or suffering for all time, we should remember that it isn\u2019t meant to. As Howard Zinn made clear, we possess an agency that transcends the brutality of our times. Indeed,\u00a0<i>\u201cwinning\u201d<\/i>\u00a0is not essential to it, neither is achieving some fantastical notion of utopia.
