It\u2019s the only public place where you can hear\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E4b0-juTiQ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kraftwerk\u2019s disowned<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/41CFmUZsBr4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early albums<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Z9O2tsIbKD0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">watch Keith Levene abuse a Prophet-5 as PIL runs through \u201cCareening.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0These things are on YouTube because of fans and super-fans, noting a cultural absence and taking matters into their own hands. But no one\u2019s getting paid, except for YouTube. And perhaps the uploader who unscrupulously turns on the monetization of an artwork that\u2019s not theirs.\u00a0That\u2019s why I\u2019m torn.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But discoveries like\u00a0<i>The Black Tower<\/i>\u00a0make YouTube seem all right. The enigmatically but actually named\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/johnsmithfilms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Smith<\/a>\u00a0is a British avant-garde filmmaker whose work escaped me until I randomly peeped an exchange about\u00a0<i>The Black Tower<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Slippery_Jack\/status\/1549862481908088839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the Twitter machine<\/a>. From what I\u2019ve recently seen, Smith\u2019s work is minimal but compelling, weaving stories and visual play from things noticed in his immediate surroundings. For instance,<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tqARskcNiEc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0the 1975 short film\u00a0<i>Leading Light<\/i><\/a>\u00a0looks entirely shot in his bedroom.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensesofcinema.com\/2003\/feature-articles\/john_smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This article in Senses of Cinema<\/a>\u00a0digs further into Smith\u2019s \u2018familiar-but-unfamiliar\u2019 approach.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnsmithfilms.com\/selected-works\/the-black-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The Black Tower<\/i><\/a>\u00a0is a 23-minute film released by Smith in 1987. The super-fan uploader didn\u2019t monetize this, which is nice \u2014\u00a0<i>The Black Tower<\/i>\u00a0is the sort of thing that should remain free of ads; otherwise, its spell is broken. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/inspiration\/collections\/horror-in-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architectural horror<\/a>\u201d is an intriguing phrase I saw to describe the film. For me,\u00a0<i>The Black Tower<\/i>\u00a0is like a campfire ghost story, except it\u2019s told next to a darkened chip shop in a disused city alleyway instead of a campfire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full tmblr-embed\" data-provider=\"youtube\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hw6exAfUWMI\" data-orig-width=\"267\" data-orig-height=\"200\"><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><i>The Black Tower<\/i>\u00a0mainly comprises of stationary shots of nothingness and near-nothingness, but this is gripping stuff. And inspiring, too \u2014 don\u2019t let anyone tell you lack of budget or gear constrains triumphant acts of creativity.
