I initially found Chrome in my mid-teens through the &ldquo;New Age&rdquo; video (probably seen via <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/music\/35-years-later-night-flight-debuts-2496255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Night Flight<\/i><\/a>). I was always on the hunt for weird shit\u2122 to help me escape the confines of life in Central Louisiana, and &ldquo;New Age&rdquo; fit the bill. The song \u2014 and Chrome&rsquo;s output at the time \u2014 was a remarkable portent. It signaled many things on the horizon, not just sonically but culturally as well. Check the cyberpunk current running through the &ldquo;New Age&rdquo; video, which also pays homage to <i>A Clockwork Orange<\/i> and <i>THX 1138<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full tmblr-embed\" data-provider=\"youtube\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9FBGd7vf0e0\" data-orig-width=\"267\" data-orig-height=\"200\"><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Around the same time that I discovered Chrome, I also encountered Cabaret Voltaire&rsquo;s <i>Red Mecca<\/i>. That&rsquo;s not too far off of a connection \u2014 Chrome were, in a way, the American Cabaret Voltaire when one looks at their respective experiments recorded in the late &lsquo;70s and early &#8217;80s. And as <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/songwhip.com\/cabaret-voltaire\/redmecca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Red Mecca<\/i><\/a> is accepted as the sound of a dark reflection on England&rsquo;s Thatcher years, Chrome&rsquo;s 1980 album <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/chromemusic.bandcamp.com\/album\/red-exposure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Red Exposure<\/i><\/a> (alphabetically aligned!) could be seen as a similar reaction to the national mood that brought the US into the Reagan era.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And just listen to Cabaret Voltaire&rsquo;s &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q_1rxkDPyb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Landslide<\/a>,&rdquo; taken off <i>Red Mecca<\/i>. My favorite DJ in the world will be the one who mixes this with &ldquo;New Age&rdquo; in the middle of a packed-out &#8217;80s night somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full tmblr-embed\" data-provider=\"youtube\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q_1rxkDPyb8\" data-orig-width=\"267\" data-orig-height=\"200\"><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Guide to Chrome\u2019s Dark, Dense Discography I was pretty excited to see Chrome featured on Bandcamp Daily.
