To enormously simplify a complex period in history, a lot changed between the end of WWII in 1945 and the end of the Allied Occupation of Japan in 1952. Censorship was simultaneously lifted and imposed. The Occupation restrained Japan in terms of what it could say in films being produced (for example, anything that \u201cpromoted feudal values\u201d was not allowed), yet at the same time, exposed it to all kinds of western material that had been forbidden in the pre-war years.\u00a0When the Americans left, the restrictions were lifted but the new influences survived, unleashing a tsunami of innovative, passionate cinema, much of which is still widely regarded as some of the best of all time. \u275e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/hiroshi-inagakis-samurai-trilogy-shouldnt-be-overlooked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"npf_row\">\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"385\" data-orig-width=\"540\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/0b597cc8db1d19a4cb6d253ca940bae0\/0614d5a4f55e7f58-93\/s640x960\/49204582759f8906a3c19f4c10cffe210fcefe63.gif\" data-orig-height=\"385\" data-orig-width=\"540\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u275d There are a slew of canonical classics from\u00a0<i><b>Seven Samurai<\/b><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i><b>Throne Of Blood<\/b><\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0<i><b>Life Of Oharu<\/b><\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i><b>Tokyo Story<\/b><\/i>, but one of the major releases of the era that\u2019s frequently overlooked (even though it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1955) is Hiroshi Inagaki\u2019s\u00a0<i><b>Samurai<\/b><\/i>\u00a0Trilogy. It was released across three films over as many years but is best enjoyed as a single piece of work; a five-hour biography of legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. \u275e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/hiroshi-inagakis-samurai-trilogy-shouldnt-be-overlooked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"npf_row\">\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"304\" data-orig-width=\"400\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/d9242da69e781f4e6d8e863cb33241a8\/0614d5a4f55e7f58-32\/s640x960\/0b94efabe5f596cf4488edcb5ea01a1875ff4ad2.gif\" data-orig-height=\"304\" data-orig-width=\"400\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"npf_row\">\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"370\" data-orig-width=\"540\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/969bd390e95f3d8247107ee73a12b0e5\/0614d5a4f55e7f58-46\/s640x960\/1390f1876aac347a8306045975c04532205d3104.gif\" data-orig-height=\"370\" data-orig-width=\"540\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/film\/samurai-i-musashi-miyamoto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Samurai I: Musashi\u00a0Miyamoto<\/b><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u275d In\u00a0<i><b>Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto<\/b><\/i>\u00a0(1954) we are introduced to our hero, played by the incomparable Toshiro Mifune (who, the same year, would also play Kikuchiyo in\u00a0<i><b>Seven Samurai<\/b><\/i>\u00a0\u2013 quite a hot time for him!). Angry and disenchanted with life in Miyamoto village, Musashi (then known only as Takezo, his childhood name) dreams of being a warrior. As he doesn\u2019t have much in the way of family, he sets off to war with his only friend, Matahachi (Rentaro Mikuni). After a battle leaves them wounded and defeated they find themselves lost in the wilderness and are saved by a female thief and her beautiful daughter Akemi. This is only the start of their problems however, as a whole heap of betrayals, lies and other Shakespearian intrigues unravel\u2026 \u275e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/hiroshi-inagakis-samurai-trilogy-shouldnt-be-overlooked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"npf_row\">\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\" data-orig-height=\"900\" data-orig-width=\"1193\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/4e87ee328652d3a868b19b43967ffcac\/0614d5a4f55e7f58-6b\/s640x960\/b630fc4ba1a2beda8705a63c2df56d950c31b592.jpg\" data-orig-height=\"900\" data-orig-width=\"1193\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I love this trilogy, though it might be difficult to follow if you&rsquo;re not already familiar with samurai movie tropes and conventions.
