Pripyat by Marina Herlop

❝ Marina Herlop is often described as a pianist, a lingering remnant of her classical training. But what strikes the listener on Herlop’s breakout track miu is the intricate trickery of her voice, tracing rhythmical clusters around the subtlest of musical beds, in a technique inspired by Carnatic music of Southern India. […] Kaddisch is a spectral torch song rendered in emotional 3D by Herlop’s gorgeous voice; ubuntu has a feeling of deep longing and lingering sorrow; and shaolin mantis is like a pop song refracted through disorienting production effects and percussive vocal cut ups. Pripyat is the perfect combination of computer production trickery and intimate emotional release. ❞ *

❝ In many parts of the world, a warm summer evening sets the stage for a familiar sight: the lightning bug. Through a phenomenon called bioluminescence, these winged beetles generate chemical reactions in a part of their abdomen known as the lantern to produce flickers of light. Of more than 2,000 species found throughout the world, only a handful coordinate their flashes into patterns and are known as synchronous fireflies. Filmmaker Sriram Murali captured a rare gathering of billions of these insects at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in western Tamil Nadu, India. […] For the past ten years, Murali has been working to raise awareness of light pollution through a series of documentaries. Focusing on the reserve and its nighttime fauna, he hopes to highlight the significant role that darkness plays in the natural world. ❞ *

A Memory, Blown out by Madeleine Cocolas

❝ ‘A Memory, Blown Out’ explores the vaporous world of shifting memories. I recorded a vocal track nearly ten years ago when I was living in Seattle that has always stuck with me, yet never really found its place. I re-visited the track more recently and manipulated it, playing around with octaves and pitch, making it hazy and fluid, like a dream you couldn’t quite pin down. ‘A Memory, Blown Out’ was born and exists as an altered version of memories from ten years ago. ❞ *

I’m presently reading The Memory Police so the theme of fading memories is rattling around my headspace.

The Woes of Being Addicted to Streaming

❝ When music is so abundant and our attention is scarce, there’s power in adding more intention to your listening diet, more chaos, more risk. The thrill in finding music that is wired to your singular life is not that thousands of other people have found the same thing. It’s that the music becomes something confounding and unique, a true reflection of where you are and where you’ve been. The beauty of the algorithm of your mind is that it makes perfect sense to no one but yourself. ❞ *
