❝ The film is credited to [Marcel] Duchamp’s female alter ego Rrose Sélavy, with his frequent Dadaist collaborator Man Ray serving as cinematographer. Like much of Duchamp’s oeuvre, Anémic Cinéma is a peculiar and somewhat opaque provocation, hinting at symmetries or parallels between words and images in its composition and near-palindromic title. ❞ *

❝ Séances is a 2016 interactive project by filmmaker and installation artist Guy Maddin, co-creators Evan and Galen Johnson, and the National Film Board of Canada, combining Maddin’s recreations of lost films with an algorithmic film generator that allows for multiple storytelling permutations. Each viewer sees a unique film. Software designed by Halifax-based Nickel Media utilizes an algorithm to create the narrative from scenes shot by Maddin, to form a 10- to 13-minute film, each with a unique title. The number of films ensures “hundreds of billions of unique permutations.” ❞ *

❝ The 1966 short The Cut-Ups is probably Burrough’s best-known foray into experimental film, which he made with filmmaker and renowned smut/horror distributor Antony Balch. The film features random, repetitive shots of Burroughs in New York, London and Tangiers spliced together in precise lengths but with little regard for the content of the image. The audio is a cut-up conversation with the words “Yes” and “Hello,” getting looped over and over and over again. ❞ *

Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One is a groundbreaking and fascinating documentary (or is it?) by the legendary William Greaves. Loosely, it’s about the nature of reality, the intended observer, and how film-making creates thorny issues between the two. I can’t say I’ve seen anything else like it. Supposedly Charlie Kaufman refers to Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One repeatedly in his novel Antkind, which welcomes the comparison: yes, one could say this is something like if Kaufman made a documentary.

Here’s a short video essay on Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One that might answer some of your questions:

Computer program by Jack Citron ; music by Balachander.

❝ In Permutations, each point moves at a different speed and moves in a direction independent according to natural laws’ quite as valid as those of Pythagoras, while moving in their circular field. Their action produces a phenomenon more or less equivalent to the musical harmonies. When the points reach certain relationships (harmonic) numerical to other parameters of the equation, they form elementary figures. ❞ *

❝ Such a process is clearly dependent upon the analog process of optical printing, but the use of punched cards as data storage is no more ‘digital’ – and no more so than the spinning disc of an optical hard drive, of course. If Permutations is one of the outcomes of such ‘computer assisted movie production’, then we might ask to what extent it is accurate to describe it as ‘digital animation’ when the transfer between digital and analog processes are crucial to its production. What Whitney encountered, as Gene Youngblood pointed out at the time, was the ‘curious nature of the technological revolution… that, with each new step forward, so much new territory is exposed that we seem to be moving backwards.’ ❞ *
