❝ The film is credited to [Marcel] Duchamp’s female alter ego Rrose Sélavy, with his frequent Dadaist collaborator Man Ray serving as cinematographer. Like much of Duchamp’s oeuvre, Anémic Cinéma is a peculiar and somewhat opaque provocation, hinting at symmetries or parallels between words and images in its composition and near-palindromic title. ❞ *

❝ In the 1980s, [Lourdes] Grobet began photographing the colorful world of lucha libre, documenting what she described as “real Mexican culture.” She focused her lens on all facets of the phenomenon, both the spectacle within the ring and intimate depictions of family life, featuring both male and female wrestlers with their guards down, but never without their masks, lending these domestic scenes a surreal quality. For Grobet, the masked luchadores were not simply contemporary entertainers, but had deep resonances within Mexican culture, from Indigenous traditions of mask-making to the masked Zapatistas of Chiapas. ❞ *

❝ Séances is a 2016 interactive project by filmmaker and installation artist Guy Maddin, co-creators Evan and Galen Johnson, and the National Film Board of Canada, combining Maddin’s recreations of lost films with an algorithmic film generator that allows for multiple storytelling permutations. Each viewer sees a unique film. Software designed by Halifax-based Nickel Media utilizes an algorithm to create the narrative from scenes shot by Maddin, to form a 10- to 13-minute film, each with a unique title. The number of films ensures “hundreds of billions of unique permutations.” ❞ *
