this just in: San Mateo’s Exspiravit Luminaria … like an ethereal quartet armed with stringed instruments, blending the boundaries between synthesizer music, orchestral soundtracks, and subdued post-rock.
❝ 100% pure high-grade Blade Runner aesthetic: plaintive chords, the sonic sensation of endless twilight, and an exquisite balance of fragile faith with urgent dread. I’m left with an image of some new lifeform crossbreeding Vangelis and Stars of the Lid at the edge of the future’s sprawl. essential music for navigating the 21st century. ❞ — James Reeves, Atlas Minor

❝ ‘A Memory, Blown Out’ explores the vaporous world of shifting memories. I recorded a vocal track nearly ten years ago when I was living in Seattle that has always stuck with me, yet never really found its place. I re-visited the track more recently and manipulated it, playing around with octaves and pitch, making it hazy and fluid, like a dream you couldn’t quite pin down. ‘A Memory, Blown Out’ was born and exists as an altered version of memories from ten years ago. ❞ *
I’m presently reading The Memory Police so the theme of fading memories is rattling around my headspace.

❝ With a title such as Tools, Ielasi has set no preconceptions or metaphors with his music except for the idea to make an experimental (and somewhat ironic) play on the traditional “DJ-tools” type of record that contains building blocks to allow a DJ to layer and combine with other records. In Ielasi’s case, however, the twist is in the fact that these tracks, despite being simple and stark, are complex, captivating structures and explorations of physical objects, composed in a way that is becoming signature Ielasi, that becomes perfect experimental music for hazy summertime listening. ❞ *
This album as well, as Giuseppe Ielasi’s Five Wooden Frames, Aix, and August are ‘name your price’ on Bandcamp for the week. These albums, as well as the previously posted ones from Minamo, are temporarily discounted to commemorate the impending new releases from both on the terrific 12k label. If you’re in need of experimental music that can double as chill out/work/study vibes then look no further.

❝ “I decided to take the surrealist approach of ‘pure psychic automatism’ to see what poured out of me,” she recalls. “Woodland Encounter,” “Under a Glass Bell,” “The Grotto,” “The Mechanical Age,” “The Flaneur,” and “Psychic Sweeping” are all products of those sessions; the through line holding them together is their exploratory spirit and clarity of vision. ❞ *
