❝ Like a 3-D take on Jackson Pollock, the latest work by the artist Martin Klimas begins with splatters of paint in fuchsia, teal and lime green, positioned on a scrim over the diaphragm of a speaker – then, the volume is turned up. For each image, Klimas selects music — typically something dynamic and percussive, like Karlheinz Stockhausen, Miles Davis or Kraftwerk — and the vibration of the speaker sends the paint aloft in patterns that reveal themselves through the lens of his Hasselblad. ❞ *

❝ Photographed via helicopter, plane, or drone, [Edward Burtynsky’s] images juxtapose the natural beauty of the landscape with the unnerving scars of human impact. Long tailing ponds, or waste sites from mining with the potential to contaminate the area with toxic chemicals, appear frequently in the project, while photos like that of the Dandora Landfill center on the direct effects of consumerism on local people. The largest waste repository in Kenya, the dump site attracts locals who scavenge recyclable plastic to sell, despite the rampant threat of cancer and infertility. ❞

❝ I hope to continue raising awareness about the cost of growing our civilization without the necessary consideration for sustainable industrial practices and the dire need for implementing globally organized governmental initiatives and binding international legislations in order to protect present and future generations from what stands to be forever lost. ❞ *

❝ In the 1980s, [Lourdes] Grobet began photographing the colorful world of lucha libre, documenting what she described as “real Mexican culture.” She focused her lens on all facets of the phenomenon, both the spectacle within the ring and intimate depictions of family life, featuring both male and female wrestlers with their guards down, but never without their masks, lending these domestic scenes a surreal quality. For Grobet, the masked luchadores were not simply contemporary entertainers, but had deep resonances within Mexican culture, from Indigenous traditions of mask-making to the masked Zapatistas of Chiapas. ❞ *

❝ [Zdzislaw Beksinski’s] first photographic works are shot with an Icorett Zeiss during the communist occupation of Poland and they portray principally subjects that are close to the artist: narrow streets, wooden walls, isolated people overwhelmed by the surrounding architecture. ❞ *

❝ In many parts of the world, a warm summer evening sets the stage for a familiar sight: the lightning bug. Through a phenomenon called bioluminescence, these winged beetles generate chemical reactions in a part of their abdomen known as the lantern to produce flickers of light. Of more than 2,000 species found throughout the world, only a handful coordinate their flashes into patterns and are known as synchronous fireflies. Filmmaker Sriram Murali captured a rare gathering of billions of these insects at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in western Tamil Nadu, India. […] For the past ten years, Murali has been working to raise awareness of light pollution through a series of documentaries. Focusing on the reserve and its nighttime fauna, he hopes to highlight the significant role that darkness plays in the natural world. ❞ *
